THE MORNING BELL VINEYARD
The vineyard is 16 years old and lives on a south facing slope facing false bay and exposed to cool breezes and strong South Easterly winds throughout the summer. The soil is decomposed granite
sand a with clay subbase which is great for water retention and buffering the vines. This together with pro-nature farming techniques and lots of attention to the microclimate in the vineyard we ensure slow and even ripening fruit of this unique vineyard.
THE MORNING BELL PINOT NOIR WINEMAKING
We picked on the swing between black and red fruit profiles in the vineyard. Minimalistic winemaking is a must if the terroir is to show its strength, and thus Wild ferments were allowed, no enzymes, acids or tannins were added and minimal Sulphur. 100% were fermented in old French oak barrels for 16 days and then aged for 9 months in small oak barrels before going to tank. The same minimalistic approach was followed with the finishing of the wine, little sulphur and only Bentonite (Vulcanic clay) for the cleaning of the wine was used.
SOLITARY MORNING BELL PINOT NOIR 2018 TASTING NOTES
This wine has a vibrant beautiful light garnet colour and a bouquet that will leave you guessing for hours. It’s constantly changing with red berries, flint, graphite and sandalwood pops out of the glass. Fynbos and clove characters set the undertone with thyme notes. On the palate cranberries and green olive is most prominent with a great salinity and granite and mineral tones. The herbal characters match the bouquet and lends a long finish to the wine that compliments the very finely textured tannins . A beautiful acid keeps the palate alive and changing and gives this wine a lushness that keeps you hooked. This is a wine that will age beautifully. I strongly recommend aging a couple of bottles for 15 years. Decant to get the full potential.
